Tuesday - 5/4/04 Recap

I remember when Billy Eckstine said he was waiting in the wings off-stage at the Apollo Theater in Harlem 1943. He said this little girl came out on stage and they announced "singing Body and Soul, Sarah Vaughan". Eckstine said it was the sound...he said she sang about 12 bars, and he was mesmerized. He waited for her to finish the song and to come off-stage. He then immediately took the Divine One down to rehearse with Earl "Papa" Hines. It was "the sound that he had never heard". And he went on to say that no matter how many times he heard it? He could never get enough...and if they lose all record of it and he were to hear that sound for the first time again, he would fall in love with it all over again.Tonight Fantasia highlighted her sound. There were no pre-packaged theatrics...it was not about doing riffs and runs...no extraordinarily high notes...no bo-bo...no tributes...not a thing that was unnecessary - it was about the sound...the tone...colors...textures. And it was the use of those subtleties to tell a musical story with conviction, passion and persuasion that was absolutely brilliant. And if I had to sum the performance of What Are You Doing? in 2 words I might say- > soothing soul < -
